This week, focus switches to the other murderer, Richard Hickock, or "Dick:/ As the detective interviews his family, his mother describes an early life different from that of his accomplice. It is revealed that Dick was a star athlete in high school, with stand-out grades ad a family who supported him. However, things went downhill when his dreams of becoming an engineer are crushed due to lack of financial support for college. The Hickock family then accounts his more recent life, filled with varying mechanic jobs and small crimes. They have no idea of their son's whereabouts, but mention that no matter what, they will forgive him and love him unconditionally. The detective then leaves and continues to search for the murderers.
Dick and Perry are portrayed to have lived very contrasting lives. The author cleverly depicts their early lives back-to-back in order to highlight these differences, as well as their similarities. A common thread of broken dreams is in the forefront at this point, and both Perry and Dick are shown to be devastated after their personal dreams are shattered. It is this common factor that sparks not only a bond of undying friendship that overcomes obstacles, but also leads to horrifying acts of hatred and envy...murder.
